They usually have a chemical coating on top, which protects them from the adverse effects that are caused by external extremities such as dust, water, and wind. However, rusting/corrosion remains to be the main culprit when it comes to screws losing their structural integrity over time. Therefore, builders and owners apply a zinc coating on the fasteners as its front line of defense against rust.
At Screw Expert we provide numerous roofing screws, and our fasteners are protected with series 10 coating which has multiple layers of protection; Zinc based treatment, Acid-resistant topcoat and a Salt resistant base coat.
